Match Report: Ashfield U16s vs Mellish U16s
Ashfield and Mellish met in a fiercely contested clash that had everything — pace, physicality, and a dramatic finish.

First Half
Ashfield started with aggressive line speed, immediately putting Mellish under pressure. An early knock-on handed Mellish the first scrum, but Ashfield’s cover defence was rock solid, keeping their opponents out of the 22. Despite conceding some handling penalties, Ashfield’s defence held firm and eventually forced Mellish back into their own corner.
A well-worked move with clean handling across the backline allowed Ashfield to strike first with a try out wide, though the conversion drifted wide. They soon piled on more pressure, stealing a lineout deep in Mellish territory. Solid defence again kept Ashfield ahead, but Mellish eventually broke through near the corner to level the scores.
An injury to an Ashfield player saw an enforced substitution just before Mellish missed the conversion attempt. Ashfield responded strongly, driving over in the corner for their second try, though once again the conversion couldn’t be added.
Mellish’s repeated ruck infringements saw a yellow card issued, and Ashfield took full advantage. A clever training-ground lineout move put them over for a third try before the break — but the conversion woes continued.
Half-time: Ashfield lead 15–5.

Second Half
Ashfield’s restart fell short of 10 metres, gifting Mellish a chance, but intense line pressure quickly won possession back. The game slowed with a series of scrums before Mellish spotted a gap and scored the first try of the half, adding the extras to narrow the score.
Ashfield’s forwards hit back with strong work at the breakdown, winning turnover ball. A well-drilled lineout move sent Ashfield over next to the posts, with the conversion successful this time. Mellish, however, refused to fade and powered over for another try, squeezing the kick in off the post.
Quick thinking from Ashfield saw them cross again, though the conversion was missed. Mellish answered once more with a physical score, but their kicker couldn’t convert.
As the tension rose, Ashfield’s forwards delivered big hits, forcing errors from Mellish. However, over-eagerness occasionally cost them, handing the ball back unnecessarily. Soft defence on the fringes allowed Mellish to test Ashfield out wide, but the home side’s sheer power broke through the defensive line again.
In the closing minutes, tempers flared, and the referee spoke to both captains to calm things down. Mellish pushed for a late score, but a crucial handling error brought the final whistle.

Full-Time Summary
Ashfield showed both their attacking flair and defensive grit, executing set plays well — particularly from lineouts — while Zac’s brace stood out as a highlight. Mellish proved resilient, capitalising on mistakes and pushing the game to the wire, but errors at key moments cost them.
Final Score: Ashfield 27 – 24 Mellish.
